Packers hold two youth camps in NorthwoodsSubmitted: 05/17/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

WABENO - The Packers made it a great day for two elementary schools in the Northwoods.

On Thursday in Wabeno, the Packers were holding a kids football camp. It's called the Youth Football Outreach camp. About 120 kids from Wabeno Elementary took part. Another 70 from Robinson Elementary in Laona held a camp in the afternoon.

Kids were diving, catching passes, running - simply having a great time.

"I think it's great we get to get out of school on a nice day and do this," said Wabeno sixth grader Bob Brauer. "Like my caoch said, 'You can hit somebody and your mom can't yell at you.'"

Melissa Peters, a teacher in the Wabeno school district explains how she helped bring the Packers to Wabeno two years ago.

"Laona (School) and I got together two years ago," says Peters. "Got to do it. Then had the chance to do it again. It's awesome."

It was part of the NFL's Play 60 program. It's meant to fight against childhood obesity.

The camp is expected to return in Wabeno and Laona in two years.

EAGLE RIVER - Some local students could win state and national awards by taking a math exam.

Students at Northland Pines High School will take the Trig-Star Exam in March.

Students need to be able to apply that knowledge to real life situations as if they're a land surveyor.

"Land surveying in itself is a basis for a lot of things in our country," says Vilas County Land Information/Mapping Department GIS Technician Tony Jones. "It's a chance to work outside, it's a chance to work with your hands, it's also a professional level position. You get to work with mathematics, and architecture, and history, and law."
