DNR Survey Finds Hunters Frustrated by Deer NumbersSubmitted: 04/23/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

RHINELANDER - "Not enough deer." That seems to be the general sentament from the DNR's recent deer hunt survey.

The DNR asked hunter's to give their input about last fall's season.

The survey ended last week. DNR Wildlife biologist Jeremy Holtz says over 13,300 hunters filled out the on-line survey. It's nearly triple from last year's survey.

The state uses information gathered both from the survey and Deer Hunters Forums held across the state. It helps local wildlife managers identify potential issues.

"(Hunters) don't trust the DNR knows how many deer are out there," adds Holtz. "In general people want to see less doe tags and higher populations."

It's a criticism that has been a common theme for hunters.

The total buck harvest in the northern half of the state was about 13,000. That's around 10% below the 2011 hunt.
