Merrill to Gain Successful New BusinessSubmitted: 04/01/2013

MERRILL - Starting this summer, Merrill will welcome a successful new business to the city.

Elite Carriers is a regional and long-haul trucking company

It will move its operations from Wausau to Merrill's east side.

Elite Carriers employs about 140 people and owns 120 trucks.

It's grown quite a bit since its start in the late 90's.

Now, their current building in Wausau is just too cramped.

A bigger option in Merrill will work much better.

"When we went to see the building, we walked through it, and I kept saying, 'this is perfect for our company, this is perfect for our company.' So we made the decision to purchase the building in Merrill," says owner Tammy Guite.

The Merrill building originally served a different trucking company.

But it hasn't been in permanent use since the late 90's.

The move will mean a slightly longer commute for employees living in Wausau.

But there's a good side, too.

"Fortunately, for the people we already employ from the Merrill area, they're ecstatic over the move because it means they don't have to drive down here to our current location in Wausau," says Guite.

Elite Carriers doesn't expect any turnover on their staff from the move.

They should be in their new home by late summer.

RHINELANDER - Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) and Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) took time during their August recess to hear from voters, industry leaders and other groups in the Northwoods this week.

Both addressed a number of issues they hope to pursue when they return to session in September.

One issue was the role of executive orders. President Obama plans on using his power of executive order to deal with immigration issues on the US-Mexico border. Congress couldn't pass a bill to address the issue.

The move would help deal with the flood of unaccompanied kids at the US border.
