Marathon Co. Jail Reported to be Dangerously UnderstaffedSubmitted: 03/31/2013
Story By Associated Press

WAUSAU - This week we told you about two Marathon County corrections officers attacked by an inmate. Now the Wausau Daily Herald says a consultants' report concluded the Marathon County Jail was so understaffed that employees could be in danger.

This report came out six years ago. This week, staffing was even lower at the time the inmate attacked the officers.

The Daily Herald report quotes Marathon County Administrator Brad Karger as saying he doesn't think staffing levels contributed to Wednesday's attack.

The 2007 report says Marathon County's staff-to-inmate ratio was too low to appropriately manage inmates.

The inmate attack Wednesday left a 36-year-old female guard hospitalized in critical condition.

We'll be at a press conference Tuesday morning to bring you an update on the situation.
