Lawmakers Fight Over Treaty RightsSubmitted: 03/29/2013
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - A Democratic lawmaker is blasting a Republican colleague for threatening to reconsider a grant for the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa after the tribe announced it had increased spearfishing goals, saying he has an ``1800s mentality.''

Senator Tim Cullen released a letter Friday he sent to Representative Dean Kaufert accusing Kaufert of trying to punish the Lac du Flambeau for exercising their legal rights.

Cullen told Kaufert his grant threat represents an 1800s mentality toward American Indians that should remain buried in Wisconsin's past.

The state's six Chippewa bands announced earlier this month they planned to spear nearly 60,000 walleye this spring, forcing state officials reduced bag limits for non-tribal anglers to one walleye on nearly 200 lakes.

Kaufert contends the tribes' goals will hurt tourism.
