Maple Syrup Producers Have Brighter OutlookSubmitted: 03/28/2013
Story By Associated Press

CHIPPEWA FALLS - The outlook for the state's maple syrup crop is much better than last year.

Unseasonably warm weather took a toll on the state's maple-syrup crop in 2012.

Cooler conditions this year have improved the 20-13 outlook significantly.

Maple sap flows best when daytime highs hit the low 40s and overnight lows are in the 20s.

Last year temperatures got into the high 60s in March, which caused sap to stop flowing.

Producers say this year's temperatures are just right, and they're hoping production will return to normal levels.

The sap-collecting season generally runs from about March 15th to April 15th.

Corey Grape owns Grape Sugar Bush in Holcombe.

He hopes to make 200 gallons of syrup this year.

Last year his company managed only 15 gallons.
