Northland Pines boys win Team Invite; Girls finish thridSubmitted: 03/26/2013

EAGLE RIVER - Northland Pines hosted their 3rd indoor invite of the season Tuesday night.

In the girls 800 meter run, Prentice freshman Cassy Kurth finished 3rd. Also in the event, Pines senior Emilie Robbins came across first with a time of 2:42.08.

In the boys 800, Eagles senior Spencer Gander made a pass on the final lap and won the event in 2:12.78.

And in the boys 200 meter dash, Pines senior Johnny Schwenn sped past the competition taking first with a time of 24.45 seconds. Schwenn was also part of the 4 by 200 meter relay team that broke a school record.


Northland Pines won the boys team title. Ashland was second. Marathon was fourth, while Prentice finished sixth.

On the girls side, West Iron, MI won the team title. Northland Pines was third. Ashland was fourth, while Prentice finished fifth.

BLAINE, MINNESOTA - Firefighters from Upper Michigan put themselves at risk to battle fires in Utah.

On the way home, two were killed when the bus they were riding in crashed over the weekend in Minnesota.

Now the firefighter who was driving the bus is facing charges.

According to a criminal complaint, 28-year-old Michael Johnson told authorities he'd slept just 45 minutes the previous 28 hours as he drove a bus with 8 other wildland firefighters returning from a fire in Utah to their home base near Baraga in Michigan's Upper Penninsula.

Officers say Johnson was combative and showed signs of impairment at the crash scene, and later admitted to using marijuana the morning of the crash - and cocaine two days earlier.

MADISON - Gov. Scott Walker's approval rating has rebounded to its highest point in months.

A Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday shows Walker's approval at 43 percent. It was 38 percent in a poll three weeks ago, the same as it was in July. It was last at 43 percent in March.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police have arrested 14 people at the scene of a recent fatal police shooting and unrest on the city's north side.

Officers dispersed a crowd that gathered in the Sherman Park neighborhood on Tuesday night. Police say most in the crowd left peacefully, but 11 people were arrested Tuesday night for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.
