Lakeland's Garcia wins second NW12 Player of the Year AwardSubmitted: 03/15/2013

- The girls basketball season concludes on Saturday. But on Friday, we wrap up announcing our Newswatch 12 Players of the Year for the Winter Sports Season.

For the second straight year, Lakeland sophomore Nick Garcia was one of the top swimmers in the Northwoods. Garcia finished 7th in the 100 yard free style at state. He was also 8th in the 200 yard free.

In girls basketball, Elcho junior Makayla Raith was the Player of the Year in the Northern Lakes Conference. She averaged just under 17 points and 7 rebounds per game for the Hornets. She has over 900 points in her career and is on the B-honor roll.


In boys basketball, Stevens Point freshman Trevor Anderson made quite a splash in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. He was the conference's player of the year, averaging 20 points per game. He received Honorable Mention for All-State honors. He's also on the B Honor Roll.

In Gymnastics, Antigo's Kirsten Tincher was the section champion in Division 2. She will compete at Nationals in May down in Fort Myers, Florida. She is also has 3.25 grade point average.

And in Wrestling, Merrill junior Tyler Schmidt pinned down his first state championship at 220 pounds. He went a perfect 45-0. He has a 3.74 GPA and a member of the National Honor Society.

All of the athletes will receive a plaque. Congratulations to everyone for a great season.

More than 60 vendors were at the show. They covered a large range of services.

Organizers say they tried to get a lot of professionals to come the show. That way people in the community could get a lot of their home related questions answered.

BESSEMER - The Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team, or GIANT, arrested a 30-year-old man on multiple drug charges in Bessemer Friday night.

The man faces charges ranging from resisting and obstructing, dangerous drugs, selling heroin, and violating parole.

The man was arrested on a number of warrants. Those were from the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department, the States of Wisconsin and Minnesota, and the Federal U-S Marshall's Department.

The man is being held in the Gogebic County Jail on multiple bonds.

CRANDON - The Northwoods saw some beautiful weather Saturday, and for some people, that good weather means good food.

Palubicki's Eats and Treats in Crandon is open again for the season.

"It takes about three or four days and seven or eight of us to get it going," says Palubicki's Eats and Treats owner Sue Palubicki.

Sue Palubicki and her husband Larry have owned Eats and Treats for nine years.
