Assumption too much for NewmanSubmitted: 03/14/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

GREEN BAY - It's a new venue for the state girls basketball tournament. The tournament will be played in Green Bay for the next 2 years.

A pair of area teams played in the very first game of the tourney.

In the Division 5 semifinals, Newman Catholic face Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. Both teams from the Marawood Conference. In fact, Newman Catholic handed Assumption their only loss this season.

But the Royals avenged that loss on Thursday, with a 60-37 victory over Newman Catholic.

Mary Sigler had a double-double for Assumption, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Gena Grundhoffer added 15 points for the Royals.

Assumption (23-1) will face Barneveld (23-1) in Saturday's Division 5 Championship game.

Kimberley Steif led Newman Catholic (15-9) with 8 points.

In the Division 3 semis Friday morning, undefeated Niellsville faces East Troy. They're the top two ranked teams in the state. Niellsville won the D-4 crown last season, but moved up a division this year.

MINOCQUA - Too many times, Minocqua-area fishing guide Greg Bohn has heard the stories of tragedy.

A parent on Wisconsin waters jumps in to try to rescue their child, who is in the water without a life jacket. But the parent, also not wearing a personal floatation device (PFD), drowns, even if the child survives.

It happened in July on Shawano Lake in Shawano County, and on Minocqua Lake a few years ago.

"Accidents can happen in seconds, and there's total chaos and emergency," Bohn says while touring Minocqua Lake on his fishing boat.
