10th Annual Relay For Life Meat RaffleSubmitted: 03/09/2013
Story By Shardaa Gray

EAGLE RIVER - This is the tenth annual relay for life fundraiser meat raffle.

BMO Harris bank teamed up with the owner of sportsmans chalet ten years ago.

"My father had cancer may years ago and it had meant something to me to do the cancer," said Sportsmens Chalet Owner, Laurel Frank.

"With the bar I have many many customers in the last two years that have had cancer and I'm hoping that this is a way to solve the problem."

They're raising money by raffling off meat.

"We have hams, steaks, pork chops. We have new York strips," BMO Harris Bank Branch Manager and Vice President, Connie Olson said.

"We have crab legs and lots of different things that surprises us after a while."

According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 1,600,000 cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year.

It estimates there are approximately 13.7 million Americans with a history of cancer.

Some of these people are cancer free, while others still have evidence of cancer and may be undergoing treatment.

"I was told that one out of every 10 women end up with breast cancer," said cancer survivor, Dorothy Baumgartner.

"And when I was in radiation, they said the number has gone to one in every four women."

One of the cancer patients I spoke with is going through Chemo Therapy right now, but remains optimistic.

"I just know I'm going to make it another year and another year," cancer patient, Martha Letner said.

"My doctor even said that kind of attitude is what you need."

In August they'll have a relay for life of the Northwoods at Northland Pines High School.
