Chequamegon High School's Mary Patterson Named District Coach of the YearSubmitted: 03/06/2013

PARK FALLS - The best running coach in the area comes from tiny Park Falls. Chequamegon High School's Mary Patterson can call herself 2012 District Coach of the Year for Cross Country and Track & Field.

Other coaches in the 66-school district picked Mary to get the award. Both her boys cross country team and boys and girls track teams won regional championships.

Her boys cross country team even finished 3rd in the WIAA State Meet. Coach Patterson couldn't be happier to be named Coach of the Year. But she knows all the success wouldn't be possible without great people around her.

"I had my assistants helping me out, and I had this wonderful group of athletes. I think one of the biggest things that I'm proud of is I know the kids believe in me as their coach, and they know how much I believe in them."

The list of awards doesn't stop with Patterson for the Track and Cross Country team.

Senior Jordan Koski was also named the District-1 Runner of the Year. He was quick to give Coach Patterson most of the credit for his success.

"Without her I don't think I would have joined cross-country. I played football in 5th Grade. She talked me into joining cross-country going into 6th grade year and I gave it a shot and found out I was pretty good at it."

The Cross Country team also finished 2nd in the state with a team GPA of 3.8.

This time every year, the Mercer Lioness Club puts together the Christmas party. The Lioness Club donates food and other baked goods.

RHINELANDER - Mr. and Mrs. Claus joined Rhinelander families on Saturday for the annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting.

The theme of this year's parade was "Rhinelander: Home for the Holidays." 

Families enjoyed watching the parade of floats and taking pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
