Children's Book Fest Features Books of 2012 Submitted: 03/06/2013
RHINELANDER - As a kid you may have loved going to the library, curling up and getting lost in a good book.

Today, librarians from across the state got a chance to learn about some of the best children's books from 2012.

The 26th annual Children's Book fest was held at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Rhinelander.

Their goal is to look at the best books in the bunch and bring them to a library near you.

Merri Lindgren from the Cooporative Children's Book center in Madison gave a presentation on the books.

"I think what a lot of people don't realize is we have to make decisions about books without even being able to see them, so new books are published and often we have to be able to rely on reviews, so what other people thought about them and that is very helpful but there is nothing like having a book in your hands and being able to examine it," said Lindgren.

The books were all published within the last year.

They range in topic from picture books for little ones, to young adult novels.

But two Northwoods teenagers want to get right back into school in another country.

But they need help.

Two students at Lakeland Union High School only have 24 days left to meet their $6,000 goal.

Nathan Grebe and Steven Zhang are trying to raise money to join a three week summer camp in Beijing, China.

Rhinelander man killed in ATV crash Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - A Rhinelander man died in an ATV crash in Lincoln County this weekend.

The Sheriff's Office responded to a crash just after 6 Saturday night in the town of Harrison.

49-year old Randy Romenesko appeared to have lost control of his ATV and crashed into a tree. He was taken to Ministry Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Romenesko was wearing a helmet but wasn't properly secured. Speed may have been a factor, but police believe alcohol was not.

RHINELANDER - Wausau Paper today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its specialty paper business to a new company sponsored by KPS Capital Partners L.P. (“KPS”), a New York-based private equity firm with significant experience in the paper industry.

The new company will be known as Expera Specialty Solutions, LLC (“Expera”).

KPS, as previously announced, has also entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the specialty paper business of Packaging Dynamics Corporation

Motorcylcist speeds away from Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Deputies at 100+ MPH Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - When most people see flashing red lights, they pull over.

Lincoln county deputies are looking for a motorcycle rider who didn't.

A Cafe Racer bike flew down highway 51 around 7pm last night going 84 miles per hour.

A deputy south of Tomahawk tried to pull the driver over, but the biker took off at over 100 miles an hour. For safety reasons, the deputy did not start a chase.

RHINELANDER - In March, Benjamin Lahti posted on Craigslist he wanted sex.

A girl claiming to be 15 years old responded to the 24-year-old Ironwood man.

They planned to meet in Minocqua.

That's when Lahti was arrested as part of a statewide internet sex predator sting.

Antigo Store Sells Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million Submitted: 05/20/2013

ANTIGO - Somebody in Antigo won $1 million this weekend.

A cashier at Krist Food Mart sold a winning powerball ticket.

But so far, no one has claimed the big prize.

The winning ticket was announced Sunday.

Since then, Krist customers have been asking who won it.

Manager Linda Hemingson said she was surprised to hear the ticket came from her store.
