GOP-backed bill looks to limit hours and days voters can cast in-person absentee ballotsSubmitted: 03/05/2013
Story By The Associated Press

MADISON - A Republican-backed bill in the Wisconsin state Assembly would limit the hours and days voters can cast in-person absentee ballots.

The measure is by Republican Representative Duey Stroebel, of Saukville.

It would prohibit clerks from opening early, late or on weekends to accommodate voters wishing to cast their ballots before Election Day.

Democratic opponents say absentee voting should be expanded because it's growing in popularity.

Stroebel's office says the bill looks to give people in smaller communities the same access to absentee voting as those in larger communities that can afford to hold extended balloting.

The bill introduced last week has yet to be scheduled for a hearing.
