Mining Bill Due for Vote in SenateSubmitted: 02/27/2013

MADISON - A Republican bill to rework Wisconsin's mining regulations comes up before the state senate today.

Republicans control the senate, making passage all but certain.

The state Assembly is expected to take up the bill next week.

Republicans control that house as well.

Approval there will send the bill to Governor Scott Walker for his signature.

The bill is designed to ease the regulatory path for a giant iron mine south of Lake Superior in Iron and Ashland counties.

Republicans maintain the mine would create hundreds of jobs.

Democrats and environmentalists say the bill is a corporate give-away, and that the mine could pollute the pristine region.

It's a hobby that--now in her retirement--is paying off for Underhill in small ways. She is one of 29 vendors who volunteers her time to work in the Eagle River Serve Senior Craft Shop. Vendors keep 70 percent of the profits, and the other 30 percent goes back to the shop or includes sales tax.

TOMAHAWK - Fishermen who like the Grandmother Flowage near Tomahawk needed to find a new place to fish this past fall.

The Packaging Corporation of America lowered the water level 14 feet to repair the dam there.

PCA owns the dam that controls the flowage.

The DNR recommended emptying the flowage a quarter inch per hour, which comes to about six inches per day.
