MERRILL - A smoke detector helped to save three lives in Merrill.

Just before one this morning, The Merrill Fire department got called to a home at 706 East Seventh street.

Heavy smoke and fire was seen as firefighters pulled up.

They tried fighting the fire from inside the house, but were pushed back outside.

They were eventually able to put out the fire from outside the home.

Three people had been home when the fire started.

A 58 year old man heard the smoke alarm go off, and was met by heavy smoke when he opened the bedroom door.

He crawled to two other bedrooms and woke the people inside.

Everyone was able to get out before the fire department got there.

Damage to the house and what was inside is estimated at about 55-thousand dollars.
