The Nordic Ski Championships kicked off in RhinelanderSubmitted: 02/09/2013

THE NORTHWOODS - A week and a half ago, the Nordic Ski Championships were in jeapordy of being moved from the Northwoods Since then, tons of snow has fallen and today hundreds of students hit the trails.

This is the first time Rhinelander has hosted the event since 2007. It's the equivalent of the state tourneys held down in Madison.

For the hometown team,on the boys side, Lou Bassette finished in 39th with the best time for the Hodags. And for the girls, Hillary Wall skied her way into 20th place.

The team from Lakeland had a great day on the course. Freshman Mack Fitzpatrick took fifth place and Will Bo-Davis, Michael Orlowski and Lucas Paulson all finished in the top 20.

For the ladies, Delaney FitzPatrick glided to a second place finish, Erin Bolger 8th and Sophia Annis 11th.

The skiers will be reseeded Sunday, based on today's finishes and race a freestyle pursuit for the state title.

To the mat... wrestling regionals were held today. Merrill hosted a division one group. The top 4 finishers in each weight class move on to sectionals.

In the championships, for the 160 class, Blue Jays Mason Reinhardt showed why he's ranked number one in the state. He got the sudden victory win over Jared Mataczynski.

Rhinelander's Conor Johnson won by decision 11-5 over Alex Klug in the 195.

And Merrill's Tyler Schmidt remains undefeated on the year after beating River Judd 7-1 for the 220 class.

Crandon held a D3 regional with the top 2 finishers moving on.

In the 126 class, Cardinals Hayden Krueger won by pin over Andrew Kelley in 1:05.

Laona/Wabeno's Robbie Rocole took the top spot for 138 pounds after pinning Kollin Champine in just 47 seconds.

In the 145, Hayden Krueger from Crandon got his 150th win today and beat Alec Smith by technical fall 16-0.

For the 160, Florence's Cole Dollar took a hard fought match 10-6 over Joey Johnson.

And for the big guys, Emerson Hegeman of Three Lakes got his 101st win and won by pin over Zack Timblin.

Antigo Firemen enjoy working on Christmas Submitted: 12/25/2014

ANTIGO - Many people spend Christmas away from work and with their families, but some have to work on the holidays to keep people safe.

Fireman may have to work on Christmas, but they don't seem to complain.

"This is like the holiday I mean for us we don't have to do much," said Antigo Fireman and Paramedic Brian Baginski. "There ain't very much open to inspect or do inspections. Basically it's just a day when we get calls we go on, we do our normal duties around the station."

Fireman have very important jobs but when they're on duty and not on a call they get to sit back, relax, recline, and watch Christmas movies.

"What did we start with? I forgot the first one but the second one was the Christmas story," said Antigo Fireman and Paramedic Brett Hefty.

Baginski enjoys working on Christmas because as a fireman he can help people on the holiday.

"I love my job and I enjoy helping people out, holidays you know some of the elderly people are lonely and usually that is most of our calls," Baginski said. "People are lonely and they need someone to call to."

Rhinelander Lions Club gives free dinners Christmas Day Submitted: 12/25/2014

RHINELANDER - A local Lions Club hosted a free Christmas dinner Thursday.

The Rhinelander Lions Club has been putting on the dinner for about 30 years. The club starts preparing the dinner in November with help from Trigs.

"They deliver their stuff to us on Christmas Eve here," said Christmas Not Alone Co-Chairman Thomas O'Rourke. "They bake their turkeys for us in their bakery. That's a big help because this year we baked 30 20lbs turkeys."

More than 180 people ate at the Rhinelander Armory Thursday. They also delivered more than 117 meals to people who couldn't leave their house.

WHITE LAKE - A group of volunteers in White Lake wanted to make sure everyone got a Christmas dinner.

They held a free community dinner Thursday afternoon.

They've been preparing for the meal for a couple of months.

This is the second year the dinner has been held.

The group also does other fundraising throughout the year.

THREE LAKES - A Three Lakes man died from a two car accident in Three Lakes Tuesday.

Three Lakes Police Chief Scott Lea says 75-year-old Glenn Hoffmann was driving a pickup truck northbound on Highway 45. Lea says he lost control crossing the centerline into oncoming traffic.

It happened around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 45 and Big Lake Road. Maribeth Carroll of Watersmeet, Michigan couldn't avoid the crash in the southbound lane.

RHINELANDER - The National Retail Federation expected Americans to spend nearly $620 billion on holiday retail sales this year.

Shoppers will put many of the gifts they buy in boxes or wrap them in paper.

Local landfills will see a lot of those boxes and paper come in after the holidays.

Not everyone knows or thinks to recycle those items.
