Group Addresses Homelessness in Lincoln County
MERRILL - Homelessness can be difficult to see by the naked eye in northern Wisconsin.

But it's here - just in a little bit different form than you might normally think of it.

"We don't see a lot of people sleeping under bridges. We're seeing mostly the folks who are transitioning from one place to another," says Art Lersch, a member of Lincoln Co. Homelessness Task Force.

There's enough of this type of homelessness for Lincoln County to form a task force.

It includes leaders from many non-profits, from the UW-Extension to the food pantry.

Its main goal is indentifying the causes of homelessness in the area and using grant money to help people in need.

Also, the task force wants to know just how many people are homeless in Lincoln County - which is easier said than done.

"This is one of the goals that this task force has - to try to put more numbers to this. But it's not only about numbers, it's describing what homelessness is like here in the county," Lersch says.

Finding permanent homes for people is especially important to the task force during this time of year.

"We don't want to see people transition when it's 10 degrees below zero. You don't want to see that any time of the year, but I think it especially hits home during the wintertime," says Lersch.

Besides nonprofit leaders, the task force wants your involvement in helping to fight homelessness.

They invite you to their next meeting on February 14 at 11:30am at HAVEN in Merrill.

MADISON - Wisconsin Democrats say they are increasingly optimistic about their chances of knocking of Republican Gov. Scott Walker next year, even though a top tier candidate has yet to emerge and they're still recovering from a devastating 2016 election.

Democrats are gathering this weekend for the Wisconsin state party convention. They say liberals are energized in opposition both to President Donald Trump and Republicans closely tied to him like Walker.

Walker's approval rating has been below 50 percent since early 2014.

But their recent track record hasn't been good. Democrats are still trying to recover from Trump becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to carry Wisconsin since 1984. And Walker has been challenged plenty but has won three elections since 2010.

HARSHAW - Memorial Day gives us the chance to remember those who died while serving our country. On Saturday, hundreds gathered at a Northwoods ceremony to pay their respects.

"It's an observance. It's not a celebration. It hurts too much to celebrate," said United States Marine Tim Bahr. "If we don't talk about those who gave it their all, who's going to? For us Memorial Day is pretty much every day."

ANTIGO - When police showed up to a car crash near Antigo this week, the driver seemed discombobulated and out of sorts.  Sunday night, Pao Vang, 33, told officers he had just flown in from vacation with someone else, even though he was the only one in the car.  But it's what officers did find in that car soon after that has Vang in trouble.

Police towed the car from an intersection near the Langlade County Airport (where Vang said he just came from) to a nearby gas station.  There, officers noticed bags full of what appeared to be marijuana sticking out of duffel bags in plain sight.  They got a search warrant and found 133 pounds of high-grade marijuana.
