Some Northwoods Drivers win at Vintage Snowmobile ChampionshipsSubmitted: 01/13/2013

EAGLE RIVER - The first weekend of championship snowmobile racing in Eagle River is in the books. Sunday was the final day of the Vintage World Championships.

The sleds are 1985 models and older.

Among Sunday's results, a pair of Northwoods drivers earned victories.

In the 440 Sport Mod - Jeff Stoxen of Rhinelander was the winner.

Meanwhile, Jesse Wergin of Minocqua captured the 440 Sno-Cross Fan championship.


Racing at Eagle River Derby Track is pretty cool. Winning is even better.

Next weekend is the 50th World Championship Snowmobile Derby.
Tomahawk native Nick Van Strydonk won last year's World Championship and returns to defend his title.

Racing begins with time trials on Thursday. The event ends next Sunday.

Wisconsin election officials scramble on voter IDSubmitted: 09/15/2014

MADISON - Wisconsin election officials are scrambling to deal with the reinstatement of the requirement that voters show photo identification when casting ballots.

The law was reinstated last Friday by a federal appeals court in Chicago, just hours after hearing arguments in the case.

Government Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney said Monday that the biggest immediate issue is what to do about more than 11,800 absentee ballots that have already been mailed, and perhaps returned, without the voter showing the required identification.

FOREST COUNTY - Prosecutors believe four people attacked a man and left him to die in Forest County woods in March. One of those people learned her sentence Monday.

April Jones reached a plea deal with prosecutors. She pled guilty to a misdemeanor for battery. The judge sentenced her to one year in jail. She will get credit for the more than five months she's already served.

ONEIDA COUNTY - Many area reservoirs can't hold much more water.

Recent heavy rains have raised water levels in many areas of the Northwoods.

This is the dam at the Rainbow Flowage in Oneida County. The flowage is only about five inches below its maximum level.

The Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company controls water levels on many bodies of water in our area.

Judge halts proceedings in child stabbing caseSubmitted: 09/15/2014

WAUKESHA - A judge has halted court proceedings for one of two 12-year-old girls accused of trying to kill a classmate to please a fictional character called Slender Man.

The girl's attorney, Maura McMahon, told Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael Bohren on Monday that she has questions about the girl's ability to assist in her own defense. Bohren ordered a competency examination to be completed within 30 days.

What clerks face with reinstatement of voter ID law Submitted: 09/15/2014

ONEIDA COUNTY - You'll need a photo ID to vote in the November general election.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago reinstated Wisconsin's photo ID law on Friday.

Election workers should be able to handle the change at the polls in November.

But nearly 12,000 absentee ballots have already been sent out around the state.

RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander Toyota Hodag Musky Challenge returns Saturday September 20th and Sunday September 21st. It will be held at five different lakes.
