Maple Syrup Trade Show Hits Wausau Submitted: 01/11/2013
WAUSAU - We all love maple syrup on our pancakes and waffles, but here in Wisconsin it's more than a breakfast staple. It's a booming business.

Today Wisconsin maple producers gathered at the "Winter Maple Institute and Maple trade show" in Wausau.

The show gave producers a look at new technology and tips on maple tree health and climate change.


Wisconsin produced 50 thousand gallons of syrup in 2012.

Although that's down from 2011, producers like Steven Anderson say it's still sweet to be a maple syrup producer right now.

"Our industry is in a good time right now. Things are going well, there's syrup around, there's a lot of expansion going on. For some reason our industry hasn't been as affected as much as others as the recession goes," said Steven Anderson of Anderson's Maple Syrup.

The trade show continues into tomorrow, at the Plaza Hotel and Suites in Wausau, with breakout sessions and an auction of maple equipment and supplies.

Monday, the Sugar Camp Town Board decided to allow ATVs on its roads.

All ATV drivers must wear helmets and license their vehicles.

But even with those rules, some residents still think ATVs on the roads will be dangerous.

But one Northwoods hospital is opening their fitness center 24 hours a day so you can workout out any time.

Langlade Hospital opened the doors to its new fitness center today.

The facility helps patients with rehabilitation.

Wisconsin produces most maple syrup since 1992 Submitted: 06/17/2013

MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin's maple syrup producers are having a great year.

A report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's statistical arm says the state's farmers produced five times as much maple syrup this year as last year and the most since it began keeping track in 1992.

The USDA says Wisconsin produced 265,000 gallons of maple syrup this year.

Last year's season was cut short by early warm weather.

WAUSAU - The General Assembly takes up the budget Tuesday. Monday, some local representatives and school officials talked to the public about why they believe the budget will hurt schools.

Democratic representatives Mandy Wright and Katrina Shankland spoke in Wausau today.

Shankland, who represents Stevens Point, stated, "In the last session, Republicans took over 1.6 billion dollars from our public education. They robbed our students of $550 in aid per student. And in this budget, they only return $150. That simply is not acceptable."

Judge rules on what evidence can be used in baseball bat murder case Submitted: 06/17/2013

WAUSAU - Last June, Kerby Kneiss died after he was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

Prosecutors think Warren Krohn was one of the men who killed Kneiss.

But Krohn's lawyer argues police might not have collected the evidence against him legally.

Krohn's lawyer argued that what he said while police interrogated him shouldn't be used in court. They say he was in police custody - but was not informed of his Miranda Rights.
