Vilas County Open Meeting Flap Settled, Tomlanovich Still Wants To ReviewSubmitted: 11/30/2012

EAGLE RIVER - Government is supposed to represent the people.

That's part of the reason Vilas County Sheriff Frank Tomlanovich filed a complaint saying some county business that should be done in public was done behind closed doors.

The complaint said some county board members debated 2012 budget matters without others knowing.

The case ended up with an independent investigator - Trempealeau County District Attorney Taavi McMahon.

He looked into the case and concluded there wasn't enough evidence to proceed charges.

County Board Chairman Steve Favorite says no rules were broken and in the end, the budget goes before all members, no matter what.

"It was all conducted in open session," Favorite said.

"Everybody could hear what happened. Nothing occurred behind closed doors. Nothing occurred improperly or illegally from my perspective and that's ratified by the Trempealeau County District Attorney's office."

Sheriff Tomlanovich wants to make sure all meetings are open to the public.

He still wants to review the findings.

"I haven't seen the report on the open meeting violation," Tomlanovich said.

"The investigative report. I haven't had an opportunity to talk to Mr. McMahon yet. Until I have an opportunity to do both of those I'm going to withhold any comment on the decision not to pursue charges."

Both men agreed that government should be open to the public.
