County Funding Will Keep Business Incubator Growing Submitted: 11/29/2012

EAGLE RIVER - A Northwoods Business incubator seems to be off and running.

The Vilas County Board is recognizing that.

The Board approved $100,000 in funding to keep the business incubator running.

This incubator, similar to a baby's incubator, helps small or infant businesses get going in Vilas County.

The Vilas County Economic Development Corporation opened the incubator earlier this year.

Two businesses use it as a home base right now.

Barry McLeane has been there from the start.

He thinks they're starting to make significant progress.

"Without the $100,000 for next year, we would be out of business by sometime after mid-year," McLeane said.

"Nobody wants that. We're just so happy the county board recognized the valuable contributions we're making to the county right now. We're just really coming into fruition."

The business incubator is working with Nicolet College to host classes starting in February 2013.

Beyond the classes, they're close to opening another spot in Manitowish Waters or Boulder Junction.

"We're also in the process now of negotiating for a second business incubator in the western part of the county, which is very exciting for us," McLeane said.

"It's a little bit bigger space than this and has the potential for some cash flow. We're just real excited."

McLeane hopes the second spot opens early next year.

This year’s growing season will be a challenge for him.

EAGLE RIVER - The initiative will help to rebound what's thought of as a suffering walleye population by adding hundreds of thousands of the fish to Wisconsin lakes.

The project could improve fishing for the state's most popular game fish and tourism in the state. George Langely, a local fishing guide at Eagle Sports bait shop in Eagle River, says walleye fishing isn't what it used to be.

"The walleye population has pretty much suffered in the last twenty years and it's really nice to see Madison recognizing that and taking some steps to do something about it. It will take a while but it's a great start."

The winner came in to verify the ticket this morning.

Customer service clerk Patti Pazera gets $50,000 winners occasionally, but this was a first.

STATEWIDE - Camping in the Northwoods just got a little more high-tech, thanks to a new website and iPhone app. You can download the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest app on your iPhone.

The app lets you see what campsites are available, and reserve your spot online. It also gives information about trails and other activities in the area.

In the “old days” travelers could always call ahead about site availability, but by the time out of town visitors arrive, they might be full.
