MOSINEE - Schield Family Brands closed its Mosinee plant last December.

Hundreds of workers lost their jobs because of it.

But Union representative Gig Christenson filed a complaint with the Department of Workforce Development saying the company didn’t give employees the proper warn notice.

The DWD sided with the Union earlier this month, which could mean a payoff of nearly $320,000 divided up between 109 employees.

Christenson argues that many people were unable to plan for their futures as they basically waited to be laid off.

"We had questions on the warn notice because there was no drop-dead date," Christenson said Tuesday.

"The warn notice has to be handed out 60 days in advance of a plant closing. They ruled that the company was in violation of the plant closing act."

He says people were basically waiting to be fired.

"One of the reasons they do this is so people can plan their lives," Christenson said.

"They can look for other work. In this case, it went on for six months."

SNE corporate counsel Brandon Brunner says the company appealed the ruling, but is certain they didn't violate any laws.

He says they followed all the rules and feel the warn notices went out on time.

Brunner said they don't have a timeline for the appeal.
