RHINELANDER - Snow on the ground helped hunters during the last day of gun deer season, which ended Sunday.

Nearly three-quarters of all deer harvested in Wisconsin were during the opening weekend.

But the snow that fell after Thanksgiving gave a new dynamic to the final weekend of the season.

"I saw good numbers of vehicles, good numbers of people out, even through the weekend, a lot of guys in orange driving around. It seemed like hunting pressure was pretty good this weekend," says DNR Wildlife Biologist Jeremy Holtz.

Snow on the ground gave hunters a several advantages over the last few days of the hunt.

"When you get that snow, it's a little easier to see movement, plus, it's a lot quieter walking, and it's a lot lighter after the sunrise and sunset hours, the golden hours," Holtz says.

Although the firearm season ended today, hunting season isn't over completely.

The state's muzzleloader season starts today and runs through December 5th.

"For people that want the opportunity to get out and deer hunt, but don't like elbowing their way in with the crowds, this is probably a good opportunity, but it's way more challenging," Holtz says.

Those challenges include shrinking daylight hours, colder temperatures, and a different kind of weapon.
