Rep. Sean Duffy Wins 7th District Congressional RaceSubmitted: 11/07/2012

RHINELANDER - In the 7th congressional race Republican incumbent Sean Duffy beat out Democratic challenger Pat Kreitlow.

Duffy says he's honored to serve the people of district 7 for two more years.

"I'm very pleased and honored that the folks in central and northern Wisconsin have voted to give me another two years in office. I'm going to keep working my heart out. I've don't it the last two years making sure we do our mobile office, our town halls, our coffees with your congressman, and job fairs—all the things that have helped pave the way to this victory. I'm going to work even harder to put our hard working families back to work," said Duffy.

The first issue Congressman Duffy will tackle is ensuring taxes don't go up.

Duffy said, "I don't want taxes to go up on our families and our small businesses. People on both sides and economists on both sides of the aisle if they go up it could throw our economy into a tailspin. So we can't let that happen."

While Congressman Duffy's campaign celebrated their victory, Democratic challenger Pat Kreitlow took time to thank his supporters.

Kreitlow said, "Running for office at any level is extremely gratifying. All the people that will take the time to support you, encourage you, knock on doors, ring phones. So today I got to thank well over 100,000 people that came together to support this race. While we fell a little short we sent a message that Washington needs to get its act together and hopefully they'll meet those challenges next year."

Duffy won all of the counties in our viewing area.

Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School needs technology and infrastructure upgrades. One of the school's buildings hasn't been updated since the 1950s.

School leaders think it's important to also upgrade the school's wireless ability. The school has SmartBoards, iPads, and laptops, but they want the equipment to work better.

MADISON - State health officials say the flu season is off to a strong start in Wisconsin.

State epidemiologist Thomas Haupt says influenza hospitalizations have been unexpectedly on the rise in October. 20 people have been hospitalized in the past three weeks. Haupt tells WISN-TV (http://bit.ly/1wo5JOD ) one or two hospitalizations are common this time of year, but not 20.

Water weevils are native to the Northwoods. Scientists hoped the weevils could kill invasive Eurasian water milfoil.

It turns out the weevils do kill milfoil, but the beetles are not very efficient.

3 teens dead after crash in Shawano County Submitted: 10/22/2014

SHAWANO COUNTY - Three teens died after a two-car accident in Shawano County Tuesday evening.

The Shawano County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a two-car crash along Highway 22, north of Friendship Road in the Town of Bell Plaine.

A white car was heading northbound on Highway 22 and lost control while trying to cross into the southbound lane. The passenger in that car was hit by an oncoming SUV driving, also traveling southbound.

STATEWIDE - Cooler temperatures helped the state use less water in 2013 than it did in 2012.

The state DNR found Wisconsin's groundwater and surface withdrawals dropped by 6% from the year before.

Power generation makes up 74% of the state's water use.

Cooler temperatures in 2013 meant power plants didn't need to use as much water to cool down equipment.

MERRILL - The first community warming center in Merrill is set to open in less than two weeks. However, Merrill Area United Way organizers still need volunteers to help manage the center.

The group recently re-fit the former Lincoln Community Bank Drive-Thru on W. Main Street in Merrill to serve as the center. It will help homeless people stay warm from November to April at night. The Lincoln County Homelessness Task Force reported more than 20 homeless living in the area as recently as July.
