LAKE TOMAHAWK - The state DNR hopes you'll help out a charity with your extra deer meat this fall. This is the 13th year of the venison donation program.

Locally, the Lake Tomahawk Meat Market participates in the free program.

The process couldn't be easier.

"You shoot a deer that you want to donate," Lake Tomahawk Meat Market butcher Todd Ahrensdorf said. "All you have to do is bring it to us. It has to be registered. We'll take care of it from there. There's no charge."

Many processors donate the meat to local food pantries. Lake Tomahawk gives it to Camp American Legion.

"A few years ago, we had well over a hundred deer donated, which was over two thousand pounds of meat," Ahrensdorf said. "Last year I think we donated about 7 or 8 hundred pounds."

RHINELANDER - You can help families stay warm this winter by donating your extra winter clothing to the Big Bundle Up Campaign. Tourism groups across Wisconsin are looking for mittens, scarves, coats, and other winter gear.

"Those would be really helpful for a lot of people in the area," Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dana DeMet said. "And I think the biggest challenge in the Northwoods is that it's just not as visible, so it's a little harder sometimes to garner that support if you are not faced with it on the streets every day."
