Area cross country stars to compete at WIAA meet Saturday Submitted: 10/23/2012

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - History will be made on Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids. Saturday marks the 100th state boys cross country championships. It's also the 40th year of the girls competition.

Two Northwoods athletes qualified for the D-1 races. Antigo's Cortland Tatro makes his first trip - while Merrill's Sydney Harris returns for the second straight year.

In team competition, Stevens Point will compete in both the boys and girls races. Wausau West is in the D-1 boys. Wausau East is in D-1 girls. Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, and D-C Everest will also have representatives on Saturday. Getting to state has it's share of surprise qualifiers as well as returning vets.


Other northwoods reps at state include - Chequamegon boys returning for the 5th straight year in D-3. Quentin Edelburg of Rib Lake/Prentice, Kyle Lochner of Phillips, and Laona/Wabeno's John Mangold will also compete at state.

Phillips and Laona/Wabeno will be going after the D-3 girls crown. Individually, Natalie Miller of Three Lakes, and Jennifer Goeman of Florence are also in the field.

In D-2, qualifiers include Devin Sauvola of Northland Pines and Tomahawk's Bryan Tomek in the boys race. Lakeland's Delaney FitzPatrick returns in the D-2 girls race.

But farmers wait for spring so they can get to work.

John Schroeder runs a potato farm in Antigo.

He says the late spring could mean a bad harvest for crops like alfalfa, but potatoes should be just fine.

"It generally started a little wet and cold, he said. "We were probably three or four days behind planting right now, but we had a good week last week, so we're catching up."

State Approves Armory Renovations Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - Women serve alongside men in the National Guard.

Since the 1970s, women serving in Merrill also had to share everything with men - right down to the bathroom.

But that will change soon.

The state's building commission approved renovations to 15 armory buildings, including the National Guard post in Merrill.

Captain Joy Staab said the renovations will include showers and toilets for women.

Antigo Store Sells Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million Submitted: 05/20/2013

ANTIGO - Somebody in Antigo won $1 million this weekend.

A cashier at Krist Food Mart sold a winning powerball ticket.

But so far, no one has claimed the big prize.

The winning ticket was announced Sunday.

Since then, Krist customers have been asking who won it.

Manager Linda Hemingson said she was surprised to hear the ticket came from her store.

Victim from Tuesday's SUV, Tanker Crash Dies from Injuries Submitted: 05/19/2013

BOULDER JUNCTION - The New Auburn woman hospitalized from a crash earlier this week has died from her injuries.

It happened around 1 o'clock Tuesday on Hwy 51 at County Highway H in Manitowish Waters.

Fifty five-year-old Patty Hanson crashed her SUV into a gas tanker. The SUV flipped upside down in a marshy roadside ditch.

The semi truck driver was treated at the hospital and released shortly after. He told sheriff's deputies he was hauling 5-thousand gallons of gasoline.
The Vilas County Sheriff's and Coroner's Offices and the State Patrol are still investigating.

Concert Benefits Raising Awareness For Lyme Disease Submitted: 05/19/2013

CRANDON - We normally go to concerts to enjoy music or see our favorite bands live.

But last night’s concert had a little something extra.

This concert was meant to raise awareness on Lyme disease at Crandon High Scool.

Sue Reeder was recently diagnosed with the disease, 15 years after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

"I always felt like there was something not quite right with that diagnosis," Reeder said.
