RHINELANDER - Pick up your room, take out the trash, finish your homework - we nag our kids every day, and it often falls on deaf ears.

But now, students are helping students - at least with the homework part.

Rhinelander High School expanded its student-to-student tutoring program this year.

It's focused on student athletes. Activities director Charlie LaHam hopes it will boost the graduation rate.

"By keeping kids involved, by keeping them around the best students, by keeping them participating and involved in our school, we're teaching them everything they need for life," he said.

National Honor Society students help choose and train tutors.

They can correct problems early on, and tutors say they benefit, too.

"I'm learning how to teach people, make them see things in different ways so they can understand it better, and it also helps me see things in different ways," said Megan Thornton, who tutors Biology and Geometry.

"I definitely have more understanding of the concept, because in order to teach something, you have to really understand it on a deeper level. So through tutoring Algebra II, I've reviewed a lot of the concepts I need to know for calculus this year," said tutor Sara Krueger.

LaHam said he tries to catch academic problems midway through the quarter, so students don't get too far behind.
