Eagles soccer flys to sectionals; Hodag swimming wins home finaleSubmitted: 10/11/2012

EAGLE RIVER - Regional Finals were on the line in boys soccer. Teams were just three games away from a trip to state.

Two area squads met in Eagle River - Northland Pines and Mosinee. In the end, Trevor Laszczkowski and Northland Pines was too much. Laszczkowski scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. Northland Pines advanced with a 5-1 victory in the regional final.

Northland Pines faces Xavier in Appleton in the D-2 Section Semifinals on Thursday.


In girls swimming, the Hodags had their final home meet of the season. Rhinelander ended it in style, as the hodags defeated Wittenberg-Birnamwood 101-68.

In the 400 yard free relay, Rhinelander won the event, finishing in 4 minutes, 16.8 seconds.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Heidi Mortenson for the Chargers was the winner. winning by over 10 seconds. Her final time was 1:14:34.

In other local sports notes, Chequamegon boys cross country team captured their fourth straight Marawood Conference championship at Marathon High School. Edgar won the girls team title.

In volleyball, Merrill won their second straight Wisconsin Valley Conference crown. The Bluejays defeated Wausau East three games to one to secure it.

Also in volleyball, Wabeno won the Northern Lakes Conference title outright, with a win a Pembine. The Lady Logrollers finished a perfect (9-0) in NLC play.

That's Wisconsin's health insurance program for low-income people.

Gov. Scott Walker rejected federal money offered by the Affordable Care Act.

President Obama promised that money would cover at least 90% of the cost of expansion for years into the future.

Walker has said Wisconsin can't trust the federal government to keep paying the money.

MERRILL - The first community warming center in Merrill is set to open in less than two weeks. However, Merrill Area United Way organizers still need volunteers to help manage the center.

The group recently re-fit the former Lincoln Community Bank Drive-Thru on W. Main Street in Merrill to serve as the center. It will help homeless people stay warm from November to April at night. The Lincoln County Homelessness Task Force reported more than 20 homeless living in the area as recently as July.

MADISON - A date has been set for President Barack Obama's campaign stop in Milwaukee next week with Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke.

Burke's campaign spokesman Joe Zepecki says that Obama will be with Burke on Tuesday. The president's stop comes as Burke is locked in a tight race against Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

RHINELANDER - A Northwoods Parish wants to raise at least two million dollars to renovate its schools and church.

Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School needs technology and infrastructure upgrades. One of the school's buildings hasn't been updated since the 1950s.

School leaders think it's important to also upgrade the school's wireless ability. The school has SmartBoards, iPads, and laptops, but they want the equipment to work better.

ST. GERMAIN - The winner of a huge Northwoods land auction will end up getting nothing.

The parent company of Wisconsin Public Service won't go through with the sale of its large lakefront property, Eaglewatch, in St. Germain.

Integrys declined a $3.8 million bid for the 187-acre property.

It held the auction last month to sell off the land.

That property also has 10,000 feet of lake frontage.
