NRA Endorses Tommy Thompson for U.S. Senate Submitted: 10/06/2012
WAUSAU - The NRA announced its backing Republican Tommy Thompson for U.S. Senate.

“Sportsmen for Thompson” was the message tonight as the president of the NRA rallied support for the Former Governor.

As a an avid outdoorsmen, Thompson says defending the right to bear arms is something he is passionate about.

"We’re a state that really has wonderful hunting and fishing. I’ve always been an individual who loves to hunt and fish, said Thompson.

Thompson spoke to gun advocates at the Central Wisconsin Firearms building in Wausau.

This endorsement comes as the Youth Hunt kicks off this weekend across the state.

Thompson said, "It’s very apropos that the NRA, which is really the spokesperson for the people who own weapons and guns, to be able to announce this endorsement on the day that young people are learning how to hunt."

The NRA claimed Democratic opponent Tammy Baldwin does not support second amendment rights.

A spokesperson for her campaign said, "Tammy is a gun owner herself, supports the 2nd amendment and is proud to have strong support from Wisconsin sportsmen across the state."

Gun control is an issue that's constantly debated.

Newswatch 12 asked the NRA President tonight what his response would be to victims affected in the Oak Creek Sikh Temple shooting that left six people dead and injured a police officer.

NRA President David Keene, said "If somebody got arrested for drunk driving you would take his car and crush it. But you wouldn’t blame him you’d blame the car. We always thought the problem is not the gun which is after all a tool. It’s the person who misused the tool and he or she should be punished."

Recent polls show Tammy Baldwin with a slight lead over Thompson but he says he's confident he will rally support as we get closer to the November 6th elections.
