CRANDON, MERRILL - The regular season in high school cross country is getting near the end. The Northern Lakes Conference meet is next Monday.

Crandon held their lone home meet of the year on Thursday. It's called the "Brush Run" because it's at Crandon International Raceway - the sight of the off-road races in the summer. Five teams participated.

In the boys race, John Mangold of the Laona-Wabeno Rebels was the winner, finishing in 17 minutes, 45 seconds. It was the sophomore's second victory of the season.

Laona-Wabeno's Megan Carlton also won the girls race. Megan defeated her twin sister Miranda. Megan's time was 15 minutes, 45 seconds.

Laona-Wabeno swept the team titles. Florence was second for the boys while Crandon finished 3rd. Crandon girls also finished second in the team results.

Meanwhile, in volleyball on Thursday, Merrill needed five games to defeat Marshfield three games to two. With the victory, Merrill takes over first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Marshfield won the first two meetings earlier this year.

RHINELANDER - You can help families stay warm this winter by donating your extra winter clothing to the Big Bundle Up Campaign. Tourism groups across Wisconsin are looking for mittens, scarves, coats, and other winter gear.

"Those would be really helpful for a lot of people in the area," Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dana DeMet said. "And I think the biggest challenge in the Northwoods is that it's just not as visible, so it's a little harder sometimes to garner that support if you are not faced with it on the streets every day."
