Lighted Outdoor Basketball Court Coming to Rhinelander Submitted: 06/21/2012

RHINELANDER - Basketball players in Rhinelander will soon have a new place to shoot some hoops. And this venue is a first for the city.

Brandon Karaba is seeing his vision realized. When he joined the Kiwanis Club, Brandon suggested raising funds to build an outdoor lighted basketball court for kids.

After two years of planning, crews are starting to work on the $32,000 court behind Central Elementary School in Rhinelander.


Competitive basketball players are excited for it to be done. Derek Lemmens, Head Coach of Rhinelander High School's Boys Basketball team says his players "seem to be pretty excited because it's another place for them to go. It's going to be high quality hoops...so if they do feel like going out and doing that they're going to be able to play some competitive games."

Local basketball players have been waiting for a lighted outdoor court for a very long time.

"When we first came to the area back in the middle of my junior year of high school, a lot of us would go to Sugar Camp to play at their outdoor basketball courts," Karaba says.

Now local athletes won't have to drive out of town to shoot hoops at night.

Lemmens says the courts will be a great addition to Rhinelander.

"We want people to be active. We want them to be out and about doing things so this is a good way to make that happen."

Wisconsin produces most maple syrup since 1992 Submitted: 06/17/2013

MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin's maple syrup producers are having a great year.

A report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's statistical arm says the state's farmers produced five times as much maple syrup this year as last year and the most since it began keeping track in 1992.

The USDA says Wisconsin produced 265,000 gallons of maple syrup this year.

Last year's season was cut short by early warm weather.

Their old fashioned approach to cheese making still proves successful.

Bonnie Bletsoe and her husband David started the business in 1983.

They have a fully operational cheese factory, making cheese, the old way.

WAUSAU - The General Assembly takes up the budget Tuesday. Monday, some local representatives and school officials talked to the public about why they believe the budget will hurt schools.

Democratic representatives Mandy Wright and Katrina Shankland spoke in Wausau today.

Shankland, who represents Stevens Point, stated, "In the last session, Republicans took over 1.6 billion dollars from our public education. They robbed our students of $550 in aid per student. And in this budget, they only return $150. That simply is not acceptable."

WAUSAU - Last June, Kerby Kneiss died after he was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

Prosecutors think Warren Krohn was one of the men who killed Kneiss.

But Krohn's lawyer argues police might not have collected the evidence against him legally.

Krohn's lawyer argued that what he said while police interrogated him shouldn't be used in court. They say he was in police custody - but was not informed of his Miranda Rights.

RHINELANDER - Thousands lost power in the northwoods, thanks to heavy storms last night.

Wisconsin Public service says 5-thousand customers were without electricity right after the storm yesterday.

2-thousand were still out early this morning, but almost everyone should have service back now.

The Rhinelander area was hardest hit.

Rhinelander School Board approves technology purchase Submitted: 06/17/2013

RHINELANDER - You can find a new smartphone, tablet or computer out every day.

That’s why school districts struggle to keep up with new technology.

The school district of Rhinelander realized that back in 1996.

That's when the community passed a technology referendum.

It gives the district $600,000 a year to spend on technology.

The board unanimously approved the motion to purchase new laptops, desktop computers and chrome books Monday night.
