Gas Prices Don't Stop Countryfest Campers Submitted: 07/07/2008
RHINELANDER - Gas prices reach a new national high at 4 dollars, 10 cents a gallon.

But that's not slowing down campers at this year's Hodag Countryfest.

That average price is according to Triple A's website, but here in Rhinelander the price is 4 cents higher at $4.14.

And if you're driving a big RV or 5th wheel camper like many fans at Countryfest, gas is taking a chunk out of your wallet.

As the numbers on the pump go up, so does the strain on your wallet.

Landy Landreville says, "I'm going to say it's 30 percent higher than what I was paying last year."

But as you look around the grounds at Hodag Countryfest, in Rhinelander, the campers are still piling in.

Gerald Robinson Jr. adds, "It's figured in. To say it costs $30 more, I don't look at it that way."

Shawn Ludtke says, "People they adjust for it. You just do it."

Landy and his wife have put on 47-hundred miles this summer. But they say the high gas prices do take a toll.

He says, "As the price of gas goes up, now you pull into an area and stay a lot longer before moving on to the next one."

So let's play the numbers game for a minute. His RV has an 85 gallon tank, so Landy says if he fills up and the tank is empty it's going to cost more than $300. That's about 60 cents a mile.

"It is putting a bit of a bind," he adds.

For Ludtke the costs add up too. "About 140 bucks. That hurts the wallet."

$120 for each ticket at the gate, $50 for a campsite and more than $4 a gallon for the gas, but according to these campers, the fun at Hodag Countryfest is priceless.

Most campers at the grounds say gas prices do take a toll on their wallets, but instead of canceling the trip they budget and plan ahead.

Looking back just one year ago, Triple A reports the national average of gas was only $2.96 a gallon of for regular unleaded.
