"Public Enemies" Filming Preparations Submitted: 04/18/2008
MANITOWISH WATERS - For weeks "Public Enemies", Johnny Depp's new movie, has been filming in the Badger State.

This is the first movie to film in the state since new tax incentives took effect in January.

Officials with Film Wisconin expect the movie to bring in more than 20 million dollars over the course of filming.

And now the Northwoods is getting a chunk of that cash.

Manitowish Waters, a small town in the Northwoods, and now a movie set.

Linda Norman says, "A lot of people are in the area. Little Bohemia itself is closed down now because of the production taking place. The inside, they removed some items, the windows they wanted to preserve and they are replacing them and they removed the tvs. They are trying to change it back to the era it was."

That era is 1934, the year John Dillinger was involved in a shoot out with FBI agents at Little Bohemia Lodge. Johnny Depp plays Dillinger in the new movie "Public Enemies", this is video from earlier filming in Oshgosh. Right now production crew members are on site setting up for filming at Little Bohemia.

Corrie Lam is the Director of Group Travel for the Minocqua, Woodruff, Arbor Vitae Chamber of Commerce, she says, "Our role is to provide the accomadations, resources and privacy they need to make a great film. That's going to be the biggest benefit to the area, a great film."

Filming for the movie has not started but Little Bohemia has been closed for 2 weeks and as you can see behind me production crews are already setting up. But security is tight, Highway 51 is about as close as you are going to get.

Lam adds, "This is a blockbuster film, Johnny Depp it doesn't get much bigger than that."

Norman says, "We hope to see Johnny Depp walk through the area and into the shops that are available. Yesterday we had a few movie people in the shop and they enjoyed seeing our product so that was nice."

And those movie people mean more business and more cash in the area.

General Manager of The Waters of Minocqua says, "Typically April is a slow month for everyone. It's right before the tourist season starts so this is a great boost for the whole area."

A great boost and a big buzz as Hollywood comes to the Northwoods.

The entire cast and crew is not in the area yet and we do not know a specific date for when filming will start.

According to people we spoke with today, hundreds of rooms have been rented out in the Lakeland area and that means good things for the local economy.
