ST. LOUIS, MO - Bill Hall homered to snap a late-inning tie for the second straight game and the Milwaukee Brewers also caught up with Kyle Lohse, beating the St. Louis Cardinals and their surprise ace 4-3 for their sixth straight victory Tuesday night. Ryan Ludwick hit the longest home run at 3-year-old Busch Stadium for the Cardinals, who have lost two straight after winning five in a row.
But Lohse tired in the last two innings of an eight-inning outing, squandering a three-run lead and missing a chance to win his 10th straight decision. The Brewers bunched all but one of their seven hits off the right-hander in the seventh and eighth. They tied the game with two runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Rickie Weeks and a run-scoring single by J.J. Hardy in consecutive at-bats. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. Polzin Named as Successor to RHS Cross Country Program
|

RHINELANDER - The RHS Activities Department has announced that Christine Polzin has been named as the new RHS Head Cross Country Coach.
Polzin replaces Mike Shay, who retired in late May after five years with the program.
Polzin is a faculty member at RHS and has served as an assistant coach for the RHS Track team since her arrival in the district.
“I’m very excited about her future in leading our cross country program,” said RHS Activities Director Justin Szews regarding the hire. “She’s taking over the program that has been bolster under five years of Coach Shay’s leadership. He did a very nice job of building up the program to where it needs to be.”
The Activities Department press release continues to say that Polzin compete in cross-country and track as a high school athlete and that she has worked as a wellness trained for the YMCA of the Northwoods.
Her transition appears as though it will be a smooth one. Both Polzin and Shay severed as assistants under Coach Jim Moore during the track season. Cross Country Assistant Coach Josh Jaeger also plans to stay on board in 2008.
“He did a nice job of spending a lot of time with Chirstine over the past year preparing for a transition,” said Szews regarding Shay. “Christine, in her own right, is going to do a great job of recruiting kids and keeping them excited about cross country. She’s got a great rapport with kids.”

Clapper Regretfully Resigns as Gymnastics Coach
|
Submitted: 07/08/2008 |

RHINELANDER - Times come in the course of one’s life where somethings have to give. For coach Justin Clapper, regretfully, that something was the head coaching position of the RHS Gymnastics team.
When contacted by HodagSports.com on Monday, Clapper cited that some areas outside of coaching had taken a greater precedent over the last few months. That meant he would not be able to give the team his best effort.
“Due to not being able to make the best of time into the sport for what the girls deserve,” Clapper elaborated on his reasons to step down. “I’m unable to make that time commitment, I feel. I just feel the need to step down.”
Clapper would have been entering his third season at the helm of the RHS Gymnastics program. His teams finished fifth and fourth in the Wisconsin Valley Conference Meet in his two years as coach. He had two state qualifiers with Brittany Terzinski in 2007 and Stephanie Walker in 2008.
Clapper added that he had been contemplating the move over the last few weeks, and that he had talked with RHS Activities Director Justin Szews regarding what might happen.
Szews, who received an official resignation notice this past weekend, was saddened, but could understand the decision.
“I thanked him for his two years of service to our program,” Szews added. “It was very unexpected to hear to him talk about possibly hanging it up as our gymnastics coach. I think some of the skills and techniques he was well versed in were very beneficial to our program. It’s unfortunate.”
As far as the direction the program will head in, Szews says that the search will begin immediately for a new head gymnastics coach.
The team’s gymnastics camp, scheduled to begin on July 14, will still begin as scheduled with assistant coach Jen Pooch serving as the head instructor.
Clapper is confident that the program will carry on well.
“I know they will find another qualified coach to compete,” he said. “It’s going to be a talented team with great girls and I wish them nothing but the best.”
“I think we finished higher than expected over the last two seasons,” Clapper added when asked about the shape he felt he was leaving the team in. “They are a talented team. I think they’ve gotten stronger as a team and support each other. I’d like to tell you that I left the program better than when I took it, but only time will tell.”
Clapper does not plan to get out of coaching entirely. He plans to keep his skills sharp with a three-week trip to International Gymnastics School in Pennsylvania later this month.
He also hinted that he would like a head coaching position again, once things were more settled in his own life.
“Two years is not enough to even get a taste of what you have,” Clapper said candidly about his ability to leave a mark on the program.
