Bogut scores 25, Bucks beat Celtics 86-84 Submitted: 03/09/2010
MILWAUKEE - Andrew Bogut had 25 points and 17 rebounds, and the Milwaukee Bucks knocked off another Eastern Conference heavyweight, making a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Boston Celtics 86-84 on Tuesday night.

Carlos Delfino added 19 points for Milwaukee in a game that featured a heated on-court confrontation between Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings and the Celtics' Glen Davis midway through the fourth quarter.

The Bucks went on an 18-9 run from there, grabbing an 86-79 lead on Jennings' floating jumper in the lane with 2:42 left.

Rajon Rondo converted a three-point play, then Kevin Garnett hit a jumper to cut the lead to two with 53 seconds left. Paul Pierce missed a potential game-tying shot just before the final horn. Rondo had 20 points for Boston.

Women's Hoops headed to Sweet 16 Submitted: 03/07/2010

STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team will head to Illinois Wesleyan for the second straight season for the NCAA Division III Tournament’s sectional round. For the second year the 23rd-ranked Pointers will also face the host Titans of Illinois Wesleyan, who rank third in the latest D3hoops.com poll.

The other Sweet 16 game in Bloomington, Ill. will feature the Flying Dutch of Hope College versus the Saints of Marymount (Va.).

Stevens Point picked to host NCAA Men's Sectional Submitted: 03/07/2010

STEVENS POINT - The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and Quandt Fieldhouse will once again be the host of the NCAA Division III Tournament, as the third and fourth rounds of the 2010 tournament will be hosted in Stevens Point Friday and Saturday, March 12-13.

Stevens Point will host Carthage College, Illinois Wesleyan and Texas-Dallas in the rounds of 16 and eight with the winner of Saturday's game heading to Salem, Virginia for the Final Four.

Game time will be announced Monday, but games Friday's game will feature the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point taking on the Comets of the University of Texas at Dallas. The other game will feature the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan taking on the Red Men of Carthage College.

University School tops Warriors for 2nd WIAA title Submitted: 03/06/2010

MADISON - Junior Simon Leahy scored twice in a four-goal first period, leading Milwaukee University School to a 5-3 win over Wausau West in the WIAA boys hockey state championship game Saturday.

Senior goaltender Dan Smyczek made 45 saves as the unranked Wildcats (18-7-3) won their second WIAA state title. Their first was in 2006.

Leahy's second goal and 30th of the season gave University School a 4-1 lead with 1:11 left in the first period.

Green Bay Co-op beats the CW Storm 3-2 in State girls hockey Submitted: 03/05/2010

MADISON - Green Bay East scored three goals in just over two minutes at the end of the first period and start of the second in a 3-2 victory over the Mosinee in the WIAA state girls hockey semifinals Friday.

The co-op Ice Bears (24-4) advanced to their first state title game after scoring twice in the final 46 seconds of the first period to take a 2-1 lead and adding a third goal 1:17 into the
second.

Wausau West beats Wisconsin Rapids 2-1 Submitted: 03/04/2010

MADISON - Mitch Borneman scored a third-period goal
to lift Wausau West to a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin Rapids in a WIAA state boys hockey quarterfinal game Thursday at the Dane
County Coliseum.

The Warriors senior forward grabbed a carom in the left circle and beat Red Raiders goaltender Steve Kubisiak top shelf for the go-ahead score 4:30 into the third period.

MADISON - Four members of the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team were named to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) on Wednesday morning.

Inglett's HR in 9th lifts Brewers over Cubs 5-3 Submitted: 03/09/2010

MESA, AZ - Joe Inglett, trying to win the final spot on Milwaukee's 25-man roster, hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning Tuesday, lifting the Brewers to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Randy Wells pitched three innings of one-hit ball for the Cubs. He picked off the only man who reached base, meaning he and fellow starters Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster have combined to pitch to the minimum 27 batters in their four outings.

Fielder, Hart lead Brewers over M's split squad Submitted: 03/08/2010

PHOENIX, AZ - Prince Fielder knocked in a pair of runs and Corey Hart hit a solo homer to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 exhibition win Monday over a Seattle Mariners split squad.

The Brewers scored three times in the first inning off right-hander Doug Fister. Ryan Braun hit a run-scoring single and Fielder followed with an opposite-field double to left.

Hart hit his second home run of the spring in the fifth inning.

Wisconsin holds off slumping Illinois, 72-57 Submitted: 03/07/2010

CHAMPAGNE, IL - The first time Wisconsin and Illinois met this season, the Illini couldn't miss on the way to winning their fifth straight.

Badger forward John Leuer missed that game with a broken wrist and Jordan Taylor struggled with eight points.

Sunday was a different story.

Leuer and Taylor had 20 points apiece as the 15th-ranked Badgers won 72-57, dealing the Fighting Illini's NCAA tournament hopes a significant blow.

PHOENIX, AZ - Ryan Braun and Alcides Escobar each homered
during a six-run fifth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 12-1 in a game between split squads Saturday.

Randy Wolf threw two innings of one-hit baseball for the Brewers, who won for the first time in three games this spring.

Chris Capuano, who has not appeared in a major league game since 2007 due to two Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgeries, struck out the first two batters he faced and finished with two scoreless innings.

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers have re-signed veteran left tackle Chad Clifton, wrapping up one of their major offseason concerns early in the NFL's free agent signing period.

Clifton will now return to the left tackle spot he has occupied for most of his 10 seasons in Green Bay.

The Packers do not have an obvious candidate to replace Clifton, and reported interest in the
unrestricted free agent from the Washington Redskins made for some nervous moments among Packers fans.

Bucks deal for Salmons paying off early Submitted: 03/05/2010

MILWAUKEE - John Salmons knew when he was left at the hotel
by the Chicago Bulls he was switching teams midseason.

It didn't take long to figure out he was headed to Milwaukee, and it's taken him even less time to make an impact.

The Bucks are 7-1 since acquiring Salmons for Hakim Warrick and Joe Alexander at the trading deadline.

Sports Director Matt Thompson joined Newswatch 12 in July, 2003.

Matt came to the Northwoods from WGBA-TV in Green Bay where he was the sports reporter/fill-in anchor since 1998. "I had been vacationing in the Northwoods for the last 13 years so I figured I might as well live the good life all the time."
Matt is from Madison and can't think of a better sports state than Wisconsin. "The passion Wisconsinites have for sports is unmatched."

His true passion is breaking stories. "People watch sports for highlights. Viewers remember sports for great stories. That's my philosophy."

Matt spends most of his time away from work watching SpongeBob with his wife and three kids. "I know it's a kids show but I love it. Just about every time one of my teams lose I say "Barnacle" on the air."

Lee DeJarlais joined the Newswatch 12 sports team in November 2009 as the Weekend Sports Anchor/Reporter.

Before coming to the Northwoods, he interned at WQOW in Eau Claire during the summer of 2007. Immediately following the internship Lee was hired as a sports photographer and worked his way into sports reporting and fill-in anchoring until November 2009. Born and raised in Marshfield, he is now happy to call the Northwoods home.

Lee has always loved playing sports, so he decided to take his love into his career. Lee graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2008 with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Kinesiology. During college, he was also the sports anchor of the University’s news show.

Lee is an avid sports fan, listing the Packers, Brewers, Bucks and Wild as his favorite teams. Sports have always been a big part of Lee’s life. He was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at Marshfield High School, including winning back-to-back division 1 state championships in football in 2001 and 2002.

When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, traveling, reading, watching movies and of course sports. You can also find him playing basketball or working out at the local YMCA.
