Milwaukee beats San Francisco Giants 10-8 Submitted: 03/14/2010
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Catcher Gregg Zaun kept up his solid spring with a two-run double and Milwaukee beat the San Francisco Giants 10-8 on Sunday.

Brewers starter Jeff Suppan gave up four solo home runs.

The game was played in front of a second straight sellout crowd of 12,000 at Scottsdale Stadium, including commissioner Bud Selig, a former owner of the Brewers.

Suppan gave up home runs to Aaron Rowand and Aubrey Huff in the first inning, but the Brewers rallied to take a 3-2 lead with three runs in the second. Milwaukee scored four more times in the third, two on Zaun's double.

The 38-year-old Zaun, who signed as a free agent Dec. 4, now has eight RBIs, sharing the team lead with shortstop Alcides Escobar.

Two more Giants homered off Suppan in the fourth, Fred Lewis and Nate Schierholtz. Steffan Wilson and Joe Inglett also had a pair of RBIs for Milwaukee.

Pointers Tournament Run Ends Submitted: 03/14/2010

BLOOMINGTON, IL - The UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team was unable to pull off back-to-back upsets, falling to fourth ranked Hope College 71-64 Saturday evening, ending their run in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Flying Dutch were able to jump out of the gates with a 9-2 run just 3:22 into the game before the Pointers could find a spark on offense. Andrea Flease hit a jumper which brought Hope’s lead down to one but they were then able to put together another 10-2 run pushing their lead back up to19-10.
Josi Schultz helped ignite a Pointer run, scoring a layup with 2:44 left in the first half and cut the deficit from nine to two at half.

Antigo Knocks Off Merrill to Advance to State Submitted: 03/13/2010

MARSHFIELD - The Antigo boys basketball team knocked off Merrill at the Marshfield Fieldhouse Saturday night in a sectional final to advance to state.

Antigo senior guard Jordan Mach led the Red Robins to the 62-45 win with a game-high 40 points.

Antigo will play Appleton East in a quarterfinal matchup, Thursday at 1:35 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Pointers Down Titans, Advance To Final Four Submitted: 03/13/2010

STEVENS POINT - In front of a packed house the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team was able to fend off multiple charges from Illinois Wesleyan and punched their ticket to the NCAA Division III Final Four in Salem, VA with a 72-56 victory Saturday evening.

The game started as a back-and-forth battle and no team was able to gain more than a two point lead in the first 8:06 of the contest. Louis Hurd (Portage) was able to hit a jumper to ignite an 8-2 Pointer run which was capped off by a two-handed dunk from Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna), assisted from Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay).

Pointers advance to the Elite 8 in men's and women's basketball Submitted: 03/13/2010

- The UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team hit seven out of their eight free throw attempts in the final 1:43 to hold off a charging University of Texas at Dallas team to secure their spot in the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight with a 74-67 victory Friday evening.

Point was led in the scoring column by Matt Moses, shooting seven of 13 from the field, scoring 19 points. Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half, Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay) added 16 off the bench and Louis Hurd (Portage) added 10.

UW-Stevens Point (26-4) will now face off against Illinois Wesleyan Saturday evening in the Elite Eight round after they defeated Carthage 77-72 in the earlier game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The winner receives a trip to the Final Four in Salem, Va. next weekend.

ANTIGO - March is a basketball lovers paradise and for the Antigo boys, they hope the sun sets on a trip to State this weekend.

The Red Robins play Eau Claire North in a sectional semifinal Friday night in Marshfield at 6:00 p.m.

Antigo is the number one seed in the bracket but they're treating this game as if they're the underdogs against North.

Stevens Point picked to host NCAA Men's Sectional Submitted: 03/07/2010

STEVENS POINT - The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and Quandt Fieldhouse will once again be the host of the NCAA Division III Tournament, as the third and fourth rounds of the 2010 tournament will be hosted in Stevens Point Friday and Saturday, March 12-13.

Stevens Point will host Carthage College, Illinois Wesleyan and Texas-Dallas in the rounds of 16 and eight with the winner of Saturday's game heading to Salem, Virginia for the Final Four.

Game time will be announced Monday, but games Friday's game will feature the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point taking on the Comets of the University of Texas at Dallas. The other game will feature the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan taking on the Red Men of Carthage College.

MILWAUKEE - Jerry Stackhouse tied his season-high with 20 points and the Milwaukee Bucks survived a late rally from the short-handed Indiana Pacers for a 98-94 win on Sunday.

Andrew Bogut added 17 points and 12 rebounds, and John Salmons had 12 points for the Bucks, who won their sixth straight game and 12 of their last 13 _ including home wins over Cleveland (without LeBron James), Boston and Utah Jazz this past week.

Nick Collins and nose tackle Ryan Pickett to long-term contract extensions, securing the services of two cornerstones in their

GLENDALE, AZ - Adam Stern tripled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-2 win over the Chicago White Sox in a split-squad spring training game for both teams Saturday at Camelback Ranch.

The Brewers scored four runs in the eighth inning off White Sox reliever Daniel Cabrera. The former major leaguer with Baltimore and Washington has allowed seven earned runs in three one-inning appearances as a non-roster invitee with Chicago.

Hoffman working toward spring training debut Submitted: 03/12/2010

PHOENIX, AZ - Brewers manager Ken Macha says Trevor Hoffman is
on track to make a few spring training appearances before the season begins.

Hoffman has yet to appear in an exhibition so far, and the Brewers have been giving the 42-year-old career saves leader extra rest.

Hoffman started last season on the disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle and missed the first month.

NEW YORK, NY - Lazar Hayward gave Marquette the lead for good
with a 3-pointer with 1:51 to play, then added the clinching free throws with 3.2 seconds left, and the Golden Eagles went on to another close win, 80-76 over No. 10 Villanova on Thursday in the Big East tournament quarterfinals.

Marquette (22-10), the fifth seed, advances to face eighth-seeded Georgetown in the semifinals Friday night.

PHOENIX, AZ - Carlos Gomez is into fast things. The Brewers'
center fielder quickly jumps from subject to subject, and has a bunch of hobbies that include watching world class sprinters.

Gomez knows he's going to get every opportunity to succeed in Milwaukee after general manager Doug Melvin dealt popular former All-Star shortstop J.J. Hardy to Minnesota.

Gomez's batting averages with the Twins dwindled from .258 and 33 stolen bases in 2008 to .229 and 14 steals last year as his playing time decreased, but he says he's committed to changing his swing to complement his defensive abilities.

GOODYEAR, ARIZ - Joey Votto homered for his first hit of spring training, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-1 victory over a Milwaukee Brewers split-squad on Thursday.

Votto hit a solo shot off left-hander Chris Capuano, who is trying to resume his career after reconstructive elbow surgery.

Votto was 0 for 9 before he homered in the sixth inning.

his way to a nice spring with his new team.

Randy Wolf struck out four in three scoreless innings, but Gabe Gross hit a two-run triple against his former team in the seventh and Michael Taylor added a three-run homer in the eighth to power the Oakland Athletics to a 7-3 win over a Brewers split-squad on Thursday.

Sports Director Matt Thompson joined Newswatch 12 in July, 2003.

Matt came to the Northwoods from WGBA-TV in Green Bay where he was the sports reporter/fill-in anchor since 1998. "I had been vacationing in the Northwoods for the last 13 years so I figured I might as well live the good life all the time."
Matt is from Madison and can't think of a better sports state than Wisconsin. "The passion Wisconsinites have for sports is unmatched."

His true passion is breaking stories. "People watch sports for highlights. Viewers remember sports for great stories. That's my philosophy."

Matt spends most of his time away from work watching SpongeBob with his wife and three kids. "I know it's a kids show but I love it. Just about every time one of my teams lose I say "Barnacle" on the air."

Lee DeJarlais joined the Newswatch 12 sports team in November 2009 as the Weekend Sports Anchor/Reporter.

Before coming to the Northwoods, he interned at WQOW in Eau Claire during the summer of 2007. Immediately following the internship Lee was hired as a sports photographer and worked his way into sports reporting and fill-in anchoring until November 2009. Born and raised in Marshfield, he is now happy to call the Northwoods home.

Lee has always loved playing sports, so he decided to take his love into his career. Lee graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2008 with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Kinesiology. During college, he was also the sports anchor of the University’s news show.

Lee is an avid sports fan, listing the Packers, Brewers, Bucks and Wild as his favorite teams. Sports have always been a big part of Lee’s life. He was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at Marshfield High School, including winning back-to-back division 1 state championships in football in 2001 and 2002.

When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, traveling, reading, watching movies and of course sports. You can also find him playing basketball or working out at the local YMCA.
