Green Bay Packers lose season opener 36-16.Submitted: 09/04/2014
SEATTLE - The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Green Bay Packers 36-16 on Thursday in Seattle.

The game was tied 10-10 late in the second quarter when Marshawn Lynch ran it in from the 9 yard line.

That touchdown would prove to be the turning point of the game.

From there the Seahawks outscored the Packers 26-6.

Aaron Rodgers ended the night going 23/33 for 189 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Rodgers fumbled the ball into the end zone after Michael Bennett knocked the ball loose. The Packers would recover the ball in the end zone for a safety.

The Packers only had 80 yards rushing. Eddie Lacy left the game in the fourth quarter with a concussion. James Starks led the team with 37 yards rushing.

Jordy Nelson had 83 yards on 9 receptions.

The Packers will play against the New York Jets next Sunday in Green Bay.

MILWAUKEE - LOS ANGELES -- Jonathan Lucroy put the finishing touches on Milwaukee's resounding three-game sweep of Los Angeles, giving the NL West leaders plenty to think about should they meet again in October.

Lucroy tied a season high with five RBIs, including his first home run in more than three weeks, and the Brewers beat the Dodgers 7-2 on Sunday to maintain their three-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central.

Lucroy also had five RBIs on June 17 at Arizona, including a pair of homers -- one of which was a grand slam.

Badgers football less than three weeks awaySubmitted: 08/13/2014

MADISON - Star tailback Melvin Gordon is still on the run at Wisconsin, but new leaders must emerge on defense in 2014.

Coach Gary Andersen's team lost eight defensive starters from a squad that finished 9-4 last year. The most notable loss was star linebacker Chris Borland, who is now with the San Francisco 49ers.

But what helps the returnees is that Andersen rotated a lot of younger players in and out of the lineup last year, so many of this year's replacements have at least some experience. The goal this year is to be faster and more athletic, in part to help keep up with trendy spread offenses.

The Badgers are also still sorting through a quarterback competition. Andersen needs to decide between incumbent Joel Stave and dual-threat challenger Tanner McEvoy by the Aug. 30 opener against LSU.

Brewers silenced by Cubs 3-0Submitted: 08/13/2014

MILWAUKEE - Rookie Kyle Hendricks pitched 7 1/3 innings of six-hit ball in his third consecutive win, and the Chicago Cubs cooled off Wily Peralta and the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night.

Hendricks (4-1) struck out five and walked one in his third consecutive win, continuing an impressive opening run for his major league career. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.01 ERA in five starts since he got a no-decision in his debut at Cincinnati on July 10.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 26th homer for Chicago, which had lost three of four. Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and drove in a run after going 1 for 14 through the first four games of the Cubs' seven-game homestand.

Trying for a major league-high 15th win, Peralta (14-7) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

MILWAUKEE - Clayton Kershaw won his 14th game to tie for the National League lead, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep in a matchup of divisional leaders.

Kershaw (14-2) allowed a run and six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. He allowed leadoff hitters to reach base in four of the first five innings of an outing that might qualify as a subpar effort for the two-time Cy Young Award winner.

Nevertheless, the left-handed ace lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.78. Adrian Gonzalez drove in two runs and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth off Jimmy Nelson (2-3).

Kershaw also reached base three times and had an RBI single in the eighth.
