Wisconsin and Minnesota split in new Big Ten format

PARK RIDGE, ILL - The expanded Big Ten will place Ohio State and Michigan into different divisions. The conference announced its divisional breakdown Wednesday night, though neither division has been named. Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Northwestern will make up one division when the league grows to 12 teams in 2012. Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana are in the other.
Ohio State and Michigan will play each other every year on the last day of the Big Ten season, and could conceivably play each other twice in one season. Because they are in different divisions, the Buckeyes and Wolverines could play in the new Big Ten championship game. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Sports Director Matt Thompson joined Newswatch 12 in July, 2003.
Matt came to the Northwoods from WGBA-TV in Green Bay where he was the sports reporter/fill-in anchor since 1998. "I had been vacationing in the Northwoods for the last 13 years so I figured I might as well live the good life all the time."
Matt is from Madison and can't think of a better sports state than Wisconsin. "The passion Wisconsinites have for sports is unmatched."
His true passion is breaking stories. "People watch sports for highlights. Viewers remember sports for great stories. That's my philosophy."
Matt spends most of his time away from work watching SpongeBob with his wife and three kids. "I know it's a kids show but I love it. Just about every time one of my teams lose I say "Barnacles" on the air."

Lee DeJarlais joined the Newswatch 12 sports team in November 2009 as the Weekend Sports Anchor/Reporter.
Before coming to the Northwoods, he interned at WQOW in Eau Claire during the summer of 2007. Immediately following the internship Lee was hired as a sports photographer and worked his way into sports reporting and fill-in anchoring until November 2009. Born and raised in Marshfield, he is now happy to call the Northwoods home.
Lee has always loved playing sports, so he decided to take his love into his career. Lee graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2008 with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Kinesiology. During college, he was also the sports anchor of the University’s news show.
Lee is an avid sports fan, listing the Packers, Brewers, Bucks and Wild as his favorite teams. Sports have always been a big part of Lee’s life. He was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at Marshfield High School, including winning back-to-back division 1 state championships in football in 2001 and 2002.
When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, traveling, reading, watching movies and of course sports. You can also find him playing basketball or working out at the local YMCA.

Brewers call up twice-suspended Jeffress

CINCINNATI, OH - The Milwaukee Brewers have called up right-hander Jeremy Jeffress, their top pick in the 2006 amateur draft who has been suspended twice for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy.
Jeffress was banned for 50 games in 2007 and 100 games last year for his repeat violation. The 22-year-old joined the team in Cincinnati on Wednesday, ready for his major league debut.

PARK RIDGE, ILL - Two people familiar with the Big Ten's decision say the league has decided to put Ohio State and Michigan into separate divisions starting next season.
One person also says Michigan and Ohio State will continue to play each other each year in the regular-season finale, as they have since 1943.

PARK RIDGE, ILL - Hold your breath, Big Ten fans: The conference will announce Wednesday evening how it intends to break into two, six-team divisions starting next season.
Football will be most affected by the divisional format. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has said the conference's athletic directors and school presidents will go to great lengths to respect
traditional rivalries.

CINCINNATI, OH - Left-hander Aroldis Chapman hit 103 mph on the
radar gun during another sizzling inning Wednesday night, then got his first big-league win when the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 6-1
victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cuban left-hander threw two pitches that clocked 103 mph _ his fastest yet _ in his second straight unhittable performance.

Harris, Bigby start season on PUP for Packers

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will begin the regular season without two standouts in their secondary.
The Packers have placed cornerback Al Harris and safety Atari Bigby on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, meaning neither player will be eligible to play for the first six weeks of the season.
Bigby had surgery on his left ankle at the beginning of training camp and was expected to begin the regular season on PUP. But there
had been some hope Harris' surgically repaired left knee would heal in time for the Packers' Sept. 12 opener at Philadelphia.
