- State attorneys have asked a federal judge to stay a ruling allowing people to vote without photo identification in November's election pending an appeal.
In Milwaukee this week, U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman issued a preliminary injunction allowing people who haven't been able to obtain IDs to vote in the Nov. 8 election if they sign an affidavit explaining why they couldn't get the identification.
State Justice Department attorneys filed notice that they would appeal the order with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday. They also filed a motion with Adelman asking to stay the injunction while the appeal is pending, arguing that they'll likely win the appeal. They said the affidavit option is unnecessary, overboard, expensive and burdensome.
They also filed a motion asking for an expedited briefing schedule and decision.
