Ministry Health Care to Cut Hundreds of Jobs Submitted: 05/22/2013
MILWAUKEE - Ministry Health Care plans to lay off several hundred employees, citing a drop in the number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.

Ministry operates 15 hospitals and 47 clinics across Wisconsin.

The facilities include Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Ministry spokesman Geoffrey Huys says about 225 to 250 employees will be cut, mainly through attrition and job eliminations.

He says it's too early to say which specific positions and sites will be affected. He also declined to offer a timetable.

Huys says the move was prompted in part because of high-deductible insurance plans that have made people less likely to seek health services.

He also says federal sequestration led to a $10 million cut in Medicare reimbursements.

Tougher Requirements Wanted for Recalls Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - A group of Wisconsin town officials want the state to raise requirements for recalling local officials.

Voters can now launch a recall effort for any reason related to the person's official responsibilities.

A bill has been introduced by Republican Representative Alvin Ott of Forest Junction.

It would require that the official be charged with committing a crime or committing an ethics violation before a recall could happen.

Plan Looked at Marathon County Jail Troubles Submitted: 05/21/2013

WAUSAU - Plans that could have made Marathon County Jail safer, were never put in place.

Marathon County officials told a citizens committee about the unused plan during their review of an attack on two officers in March.

Marathon County Administrator Brad Karger said they made the plan after 2010 survey showed widespread unease with jail employees.

The plan would have come up with solutions for specific problems shown by the survey.

SHAWANO COUNTY - We now know the name of the man killed in a one-car crash this week. 75-year-old Leon Felix Wychesit of Gillet died Monday.

He was apparently the passenger in a car driven by Tina Wychesit.

Their car crashed into a tree on North First Street in Bonduel. Responders took both to the hospital.

The 75-year-old man was pronounced dead at the Shawano Medical Center.

There's no word yet if alcohol or speed played roles in the crash.

Joint Finance Committee approves food stamp measure Submitted: 05/21/2013

MADISON - If state Republicans get their way, people on Food Stamps will have to spend at least a set minimum number of hours working or training for a job.

The Legislature's budget committee approved Governor Walker's proposal today.

It requires able-bodied adults on Wisconsin's food stamps program spend at least 20 hours a week working or getting trained for a job.

Those who don't meet the requirement would be limited to three months of benefits over three years.

Home Sales Up Overall for the State Submitted: 05/21/2013

MADISON - Home sales in Wisconsin keep growing.

New numbers show April was the 22nd consecutive month of growth.

Sales were up 9 percent compared to April of last year.

The median price for existing homes rose 8 percent.

For the northern region of the state, sales were up five percent in April.

Massive tornado flattens homes, neighborhoods in Oklahoma Submitted: 05/20/2013

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - A monstrous tornado as much as a mile wide roars through the Oklahoma City suburbs, flattening entire neighborhoods, setting buildings on fire and landing a direct blow on an elementary school.

NBC News reports at least 37 people are confirmed dead as of 7:30 p.m.

The storm laid waste to scores of buildings in Moore, south of the city.

The National Weather Service says it had winds up to 200 mph.

People wearing neon-green vests were joined by residents in the search through rubble. Neighborhoods are flattened and homes blown apart.

Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department says an elementary school took a direct hit from the mile-wide tornado.

Deadline for No-Call List Nears Again Submitted: 05/18/2013

MADISON - The quarterly deadline to place a telephone number on Wisconsin's no-call list is approaching.

The deadline to be added to the list is May 31. Any number put on the list then will be protected from unwanted phone solicitations and text messages starting July 1.

Registrations are good for two years, and people can re-register their numbers at any time.

The list is updated four times a year.

Anyone who misses the May 31 deadline won't be able to get their number added to the list until Oct. 1.

Numbers can be added to the list at http://nocall.wisconsin.gov or by calling 1-866-966-2255.

Political calls, calls from nonprofit organizations and calls made in response to a written or verbal request or permission are not covered.
