DNR warden shares ice safety tips Submitted: 01/10/2017
Park Falls - During this time of year, thousands of people enjoy outdoor sports like snowmobiling and ice fishing.

State officials want to remind people to stay safe outdoors. DNR Conservation Warden Dan Michels says anybody on the ice should be careful.
"No ice, is safe ice. The ice safety or ice thickness varies a lot from water body to water body especially on rivers where there's flowing conditions, so we really caution people to take it slow and easy," said Michels.

Michels says people should bring safety items like ice cleats and rope when out on the ice. If you do fall through ice, Michels says having ice picks can be helpful.

"Ice picks such as these ones here. I carry them in my pocket. If you do go through the ice, you can use the picks to get yourself back out," said Michels.

Also remember to bring a cell phone and keep it in a water proof container.
