- Wisconsin wildlife officials say hunters killed more turkeys this past spring than last year. The Department of Natural Resources says hunters registered 41,815 birds during the 2014 spring season, up 10.7 percent from spring 2013.
The harvest grew even though fewer hunters were in the woods. The agency issued 211,307 permits, down from 210,496 last year. The decline is due in part to a DNR decision to reduce over-the-counter permit availability by 25 percent in zones four and five and eliminate selling leftover permits completely in zones six and seven. DNR officials say decent weather throughout much of the season helped the harvest.
