- Stray cats in Wausau needed a place to go.
Now the city of Wausau has reached a deal with its local Humane Society that will allow police to resume picking up stray cats.
Officers had stopped picking up strays in January because they had no place to put them.
That was after the city rejected a contract with the Humane Society of Marathon County.
The city council approved a contract Tuesday that will provide shelter for stray cats and other animals through January 1st.
Dogs are not covered.
The $32,000 deal with the Humane Society covers up to 150 strays picked up in Wausau and several surrounding communities.
Additional animals will cost $220 each.
The city previously rejected an $80,000, one-year contract with the Humane Society.
