Decision expected soon on school mascot bill Submitted: 12/18/2013
Madison - We'll know soon if a bill making it harder to force schools to drop race based nicknames will become law.

Governor Scott Walker says whether he signs or vetos the bill it comes down to concerns about if current law tramples on free speech rights.

Walker's comments Tuesday are the strongest signal yet that he may sign the bill.

That's despite pressure from Wisconsin's tribal leaders and others to veto it.
Walker said he would announce his decision Thursday, the deadline for him to act.

The bill makes people who object to a school's mascot circulate a petition and get 10 percent of the district's population to sign it to trigger a review.

Current law requires a review based on a single complaint.
