DNR Releases 2013 Wolf Population Numbers Submitted: 05/06/2013
Rhinelander - The DNR hoped allowing a wolf hunt in Wisconsin would lower the wolf population.

That's exactly what happened.

The DNR counted between 809 and 834 wolves in the state this year. Last year, the wolf population was between 815 and 880.

Hunters and trappers killed 117 wolves this year.

DNR carnivore specialist David MacFarland says the first-year quota was conservative. The Wolf Advisory Committee will meet May 23 to develop new quota recommendations for the DNR.

The DNR will set the quota in June.
