Marathon County Jail Does Only Limited Searches of Work Release Inmates Submitted: 04/24/2013
Wausau - The Marathon County Jail saw two corrections officers attacked last month, but it does only limited searches of inmates returning to jail from work-release programs.

That's despite a recommendation to beef up searches.

79 of the jail's 279 inmates are in the facility's Huber section, meaning they're eligible for work release.

When they return to jail they go through a metal detector and are patted down for weapons. But the jail doesn't have enough staff to do strip searches.

In theory, that could mean inmates are sneaking in weapons or contraband.

The state Department of Corrections says strip searches are authorized for inmates convicted of felonies.

A 2011 independent report recommended the Marathon County Jail do those searches.

Authorities say their resources are too limited.
