- Five children nationwide have already died from the flu this year.
Experts are predicting one of the worst flu seasons in years.
So far, the southern United States has been hit harder than our area.
But that doesn't mean the Northwoods is in the clear.
There's been at least one confirmed case here this winter.
The most effective way to keep yourself healthy is to get a flu shot.
But remember to keep your eye out for common symptoms as well.
"We're looking for higher fevers, muscle aches, chills, cold symptoms, sinus symptoms," says Kelly Brandt, a nurse practitioner with Ministry Medical Group in Rhinelander.
Everyone is at risk to get the flu, no matter how old they are.
But there are certain people that need to be especially careful.
"Our highest risk populations are children under five, especially children under two, and older adults over 65. Pregnant women are also a high-risk population," she says.
