WAUSAU - Trips to state were on the line in girls tennis on Wednesday. Wausau East was hosting a Division 1 sectional.
Rhinelander, Merrill, Stevens Point, and Wisconsin Rapids among the schools with players competing.
It was a tough day for the Hodags. Lyssa Messerli (#1 singles), and the team of Beth Zenk and Kelsie Prahl (#1 doubles) fell in the opening round, as well as #4 singles rep, Eva O'Melia. Although O'Melia did win third place in #4 singles.
In #1 singles, Gabi Kitchell of D-C Everest won the section championship and is off to state. She has only lost one match all season.
Also Madison bound, is Wausau West's #1 Doubles team of Caroline Krolicki and Mallory Wanserski. They captured the section crown with a win over Eau Claire Memorial.
Marshfield's Nadeen Lieberman was also among the athletes heading to next week's state meet in Madison.
For Merrill, Annie DeBroux fell in the semifinals at #3 singles, while the #1 doubles team of Jolene Ladewig and Morgan Wilde lost in the quarterfinals.
