Spirit Chopper Helps Scouts Hone First Aid Skills Submitted: 08/10/2012
Pine Lake - Campfires, s’mores and swimming – those are standard for summer campers.

But today in Pine Lake, some scouts got a camping experience that was anything but standard.

Ministry Healthcare’s Spirit chopper flew into Hanna Venture Base, where scouts are learning intensive wilderness skills.

The visit put their first aid skills to the test. "Talking about it is one thing, but going through the actual scenario is completely different" said Eagle Scout Jon Heffron.

"Today's scenario is that we had a scouter that was missing for awhile, and turned out he fell down a small cliff and fractured his femur and had laid there sometime bleeding for awhile," said Kochemink Voyage course director George Lawless. "The exercise is to do an extraction from a wilderness point - to be able to contact EMS, treat the patient immediately, prepare him for transport to professional services."

At first, the scouts thought it was real.

"It was easy but when you get halfway through it, and they kind of figured out it was fake, we all sat down and laughed a little bit, which was kind of fun," said Matt Jaworski, the "injured" scout.

Jaworski pretended to be wounded for an hour, but the lessons from today are real.

"Every year, there are stories about horrible accidents such as the one that we're demonstrating today," Lawless said.

"If there's injury, we need to know how to help it so we don't have to deal with something like this" Jaworski said.

"Learning how to direct people in emergency situations, knowing what to do, knowing how to properly do something and taking that back home. Not just for this week, but going home and continuing to practice them," Heffron said.

"The first thing that we're hoping the scouts take away from this exercise is a higher level of confidence to be able to react better to emergency situations so they can apply the knowledge that we know they have inside of them," Lawless said.
