Republican Candidates Prepare For The 34th Assembly Primary Submitted: 08/07/2012
Rhinelander - One week from today voters will cast ballots in the 34th Assembly District primary election.

Last week, candidates from the Democratic and Republican sides participated in debate forums.

On the Republican side, restaurant owner Rob Swearingen faces Rhinelander City Council president Alex Young in Tuesday's primary. Swearingen has been knocking on doors throughout the district to ensure voters get to the polls.

Going to door-to-door is challenging, but Swearingen says he likes meeting voters.

Swearingen's been balancing his duties at the Al-Gen Supper Club while campaigning throughout the district.

"The campaign and the business has been all consuming since we announced at the end of April," Swearingen says. "So far so good, we've been able to manage both locations but of course we're in our busy season at the restaurant. But as soon as we get up in the morning it's focused on the campaign, as the afternoon rolls in we have to make sure we're at the restaurant to take care of business."

He's campaigned throughout the entire district over the past few weeks.

Swearingen's says he feels confident about his chances but says he won't stop campaigning until the election.

"You're going to have to cross the aisle to talk to both parties to put something together," Swearingen says.

"There's been obviously a lot of disconnect between the two parties across the state, not only the state, but the nation, but we need to restore some civility down in Madison. On occasion you're going to have to walk across that aisle and let's get some stuff together to put people back where they're comfortable with government."

Swearingen believes government doesn't create jobs, but can help create an environment that enables job creation.

He's campaigned throughout the entire district over the past few weeks.

We did attempt to contact Alex Young several times for an update on his campaign, but were unsuccessful.
