Wausau - Police are investigating after a man turned up at a Wausau hospital with a serious arm injury first reported as a stabbing.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, Wausau police were called early Sunday morning after a man came into the emergency room at Aspirus Wausau hospital.

The man claimed he had been hurt at a bar north of Merrill when someone bumped into him with a broken beer bottle. Lincoln county deputies checked into the story.

A bartender said the man had never been there.

The man later admitted he was hurt at a private residence in the town of Maine, but still claimed it had been an accident.

The case was referred back to the Marathon county sheriff's department and Wausau police.
