Rhinelander - It only takes a second to do and it could save your life. That's what law enforcement agencies nationwide want you to remember about buckling your seat belt.

This years "Click it or Ticket" campaign is this month, and the Oneida County Sheriff's department will be on the lookout.

During the week of May 21st to May 27th the Sheriff's department will participate in the national seat belt safety event. A grant from the DOT will allow them to put extra man-power on the streets. "We'll have four different dates during that week where we'll have squads out enforcing the seat belt law. Particularly Saturday night, four squads out later in the evening hours," says Lt. Lloyd Gauthier, from the Oneida County Sheriff's Department.

The DOT's Bureau of Transportation Safety says the most common offenders are young adult males, and even more specifically, those who drive pick-up trucks. And there's even a time of day that most often sees deadly accidents with seat belt-less passengers.

"The folks that end up getting in crashes during hours of darkness are less likely to be wearing their seat belt than the individuals involved in crashes during daylight hours," says Major Sandra Huxtable, Director of the Bureau of Transportation Safety.

Major Huxtable also wants to remind people being an un-belted passenger is just as dangerous. She says a person inside a car who isn't belted in becomes a projectile in a crash and could hurt other passengers as well as themselves.

Lt. Gauthier from the Sheriff's Department also says the fine for an adult without a seat belt in only ten dollars. But for children the fine is significantly higher.
